Let’s say something really polarizing – Valentine’s Day.
I know, I know. Some of us tend to get pretty grumpy when it comes to St. Valentine’s Day because we assume that it’s only purpose is to celebrate our significant others. But I think that’s too narrow-minded; I think February 14th is for telling everyone in your life who is special to you that you love them. I also think it’s an excellent opportunity to pull out your favorite lip color and celebrate being a beautiful human being, while making yourself feel confident.
Maybe even a little sassy.
Today’s look is a very neutral one that pairs with just about any lip color or formula your heart desires – on Valentine’s Day or any day! You can intensify the look with a black liner, more lashes or no lashes, or a contoured cheek. My philosophy for makeup is simple – do what makes you feel like a million bucks. If you’re rocking it with confidence, no one is going to question you.
Let’s talk about different lip product formulas. Lip glosses are stunning and generally feel comfortable and moisturizing – they make your lips look plump and kissable and come in every shade under the sun. However, glosses need to be reapplied often and do not play well with eating and drinking but certainly have their place, either on their own or over a lipstick. A few of my favorites include the Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquers and Maybelline Elixirs.
Next up we have your Matte Lipsticks, which are built to last! The trade-off is that they will be less kind to your lips and will likely be a bit drying. But, this is the price we pay for a longer lasting color. The one I’m living for currently is Colour Pop’s Frenchie Lippie Stick, a true bright red (which I am wearing in the video). It has a nice edge that I use to carve out my lips, creating a lovely shape and giving structure to the pop of red on my pout. Another excellent option is Lip Liners, as they are meant to be long-lasting and are matte. Apply all over the lips and go!
Liquid Lipsticks have caused quite a stir over the last year or so, with just about every single makeup brand coming out with their own. Hats off to Rimmel for theirs, which include a hydrating gloss, as these suckers can tend to be extremely drying on your lips. Kat Von D makes beautiful, comfortable liquid lipsticks but they can tend to rub off in the center after eating and drinking. Once applied this formula will not budge, so use caution!
A good old creamy lipstick never goes out of style and are worth mentioning. By far the most accessible lip product on the market, there is an overwhelming amount of choices in every beauty department. CoverGirl really slays the lipstick game in my opinion, offering a satin finish in a plethora of shades that stain the lips so the color is still there once the glossiness has faded. One of my favorite high-end options is MAC lipsticks. They have a ton of finishes, but Ruby Woo has to be one of my top picks for Valentine’s Day. It is a true Retro Matte red that takes serious work to remove – ideal for looking like a siren who can still smooch without flinching. It’s a classic for a reason!
Valentine’s Day at its core is about celebrating the people you love in your life. If you just so happen to also nail a classic red lip, unexpected purple or a subtle glossy lip, good on ya. No one says you can’t tell your loved ones how much they mean to you without looking and feeling fabulous. Have fun and share your favorites in the comments below!
