Cheers to National Margarita Day

In case you didn’t know, February 22nd marks National Margarita Day! Though who really needs an excuse to indulge in this popular cocktail? Boasting the perfect balance of sweet and sour, it always hits the spot and seasonal varieties keep it pouring year-round. This year the national day celebration falls on a Friday so get your post-work plans in place and check out some of our favorite recipes below to craft your own!

 

Skinny Margarita
The reduced guilt, margarita go-to. Skinny margs are a great way to indulge while avoiding the usual sugar overload and the frequent hangover that comes with it. Plus, a simple set of ingredients mean they’re a breeze to make at home.  We like the following straightforward recipe from What’s Gaby Cooking.

5 ounces tequila
5 ounces freshly squeezed citrus juice of your choice
3 ounces lime juice
2 teaspoons agave nectar
splash of sparkling water

Instructions
Run a wedge of lime across the top of 2 cocktail glasses. Once damp, coat the rim in salt. Add all the ingredients except the sparkling water into a cocktail shaker with a few cubes of ice. Shake for 30 seconds until chilled and then strain the margaritas into serving glasses with new ice. Top with a splash of sparkling water in each glass and serve immediately.

 

Avo-rita
It may actually be avocado margaritas, not avocado toast, that are draining our savings this season. But, the deliciously creamy concoction is absolutely worth it. Plus, avocados smooth out the flavor pallet and reduce the need for sweeteners, making it feel at least a bit healthier. Try McKel Hill’s gorgeous recipe, inspired by Avo restaurant, which she shares on Nutrition Stripped.

Ingredients – 3 servings
½ small ripe avocado
Juice of 1 limes (about 2 tablespoons)
½ teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
4 ounces tequila
1 cup of ice
Garnish: fresh lime zest, salt on the rim, watermelon radish (just for looks)

Instructions
In a blender, combine all ingredients until smooth. Serve immediately and garnish with optional garnishes or salt the rim prior to pouring the margarita. Tip: Blend in a high-speed blender for a super creamy margarita.

 

 

Frozen Virgin Margarita
A frozen virgin margarita lets everyone in on the Margarita Day celebrations. Simple and satisfying, they’re a hit with all ages. The following recipe from Deborah at Taste and Tell packs a punch with the orange, grapefruit, and limeade flavor combination.

Lime wedge
Coarse sugar
1 (6-oz) can frozen limeade concentrate
¾ cup orange juice
2/3 cup unsweetened grapefruit juice
4 cups ice cubes

Instructions
Place the sugar on a shallow plate. Rub the edge of 4 glasses with the lime wedge, then dip the rims in the coarse sugar. Combine the frozen limeade concentrate, orange juice, grapefruit juice and ice cubes in a blender and blend until slushy. Pour into the glasses to serve.
