The “Mom” role has morphed into a many-legged creature that is expected to be experts at all things; it’s synonymous with chef, businesswoman, homework tutor, know-it-all-fixer-upper, and all around superwoman. And sometimes, you just need a break! So when those days threaten to overwhelm you, take a few hours completely kid-free and unwind. So before your mind comes up with all the excuses for why you “can’t” take some time for yourself, remember that you actually can, and you should. Allow yourself to rest, relax, and recharge, with easy “staycation” ideas for moms with just a few hours to steal.
Get a Massage. These days a mani/pedi won’t cut it, because you’ll mentally be running through lists, or tempted to check your phone. Commit to a mini spa day or hour long massage to completely unwind, without the temptation of a phone call interrupting your quiet time.
Go to a Yoga and Meditation Class. Time spent within a guided meditation, yoga stretching, and focusing on your breath has immediate physical and mental benefits; when done regularly, mindfulness and meditation practice will strengthen, and provide you with useful tools to remain calm in stressful situations or kid-inspired chaos.
Go for a Run. Cardio exercise will naturally force your breathing into a regular pattern when stressed or anxious. You’ll quickly feel the effects of fresh air, nature, and the natural release of endorphins to boost your mood and clear your mind.
Drive to Your Favorite Spot. Everyone has one – so whether it’s the beach, coast, forest, or a park bench to people watch, go there, and tune out. Listen to some music, have a snack, and just be.
Weekly Happy Hours. Grab your best girl friends and make happy hour a thing again. Give yourselves time to be social outside of your family, and unwind with a nice glass of wine.
Try Something New. Challenge yourself by trying a new activity or hobby – go to a rock climbing gym, or take a cooking class. Naturally you will be distracted by your willingness to learn and focus on the task at hand.
As with everything in life, it’s essential to find balance. Whether you’re a working mom, or a stay-at -home mom, schedules are busy, and responsibilities are great; take time for yourself to become more focused, energized, and exude happiness throughout all areas of your life.
